Heating Your Home In Extreme Cold

Heating your home in extreme cold

Are you prepared to heat your home?

Here in the Greater Pittsburgh region, we’re not spared from having to deal with the extreme cold. During the months of January and February (on any given year) we can easily see temperatures dip into the single-digits and below zero. When this happens, your heating system is going to be working overtime. We’ve prepared a few tips to keep you and your home warm during these times of extreme cold.

1. Check Your Filter

dirty air filter vs clean air filter

One of the most common problems we see during the heating season is a dirty furnace filter. A dirty filter can cause a plethora of problems including:

  • Frequent Repairs
  • Higher Energy Consumption
  • Poor Temperature Reguilation
  • Air Quality Issues
  • System Failure

For more information on changing your filter(s), please visit: How Often Do I Need To Change My Air Filter?

2. Keep your home at a consistent temperature

Thermostat consistency

Keep the temperature in your home the same throughout the day and night to limit how much your furnace needs to run. Otherwise, it will need to “catch up” to the new temperature and add additional stress.  It will also be more comfortable in your home throughout the day as the temperature outside fluctuates.

3. Close blinds and curtains

Close Curtains

To keep the warm air in, close blinds and curtains to act as another layer of insulation. If you have time, take a look at picking up some thermal curtains.

4. Limit door use

Close the door to keep warm air in!

When you open doors, you let warm air out! Limit door use and keep that warm air inside.

5. Call Spurk HVAC
